10 Things You'll Only Know If You're A Drag Queen
Drag queens are one of the more famous subcultures of the LGBT community, but they’re also among the most misunderstood and underappreciated. Many people think that drag queens are simply men who like to dress up as women, but the reality is much deeper than that. In fact, there are many things that you’ll only know if you’re a drag queen — and now you can find out what they are right here!
1) The hair
Wigs are a huge part of drag queen shows. In order to have the most realistic hair, many queens use wigs that are made from real human hair. The most popular brand of wigs for drag queens is probably Rupaul's Drag Race. To achieve the iconic drag queen look, you need to have big, voluminous hair. Many queens will tease their natural hair with an old-fashioned teasing comb and then put on hairspray or hairspray gel to keep it in place.
RuPaul is a drag queen who starred on her own show on VH1 called RuPaul's Drag Race. She has had many other shows on VH1, Logo TV, and MTV as well.
Drag queen makeup involves creating the perfect blend of colors so that your lips stand out without looking too garish or too pale.
2) The heels
High heels are a must for any drag queen. Not only do they make you look taller and more commanding, but they also help to create the illusion of an hourglass figure. Plus, walking in heels is a skill that takes practice. So if you can master it, you're sure to be a queen of the drag scene. Drag queens often wear makeup like all women, but with some distinct differences. For instance, their makeup typically has less color than regular makeup because drag queens try to emulate women's faces rather than altering them dramatically with makeup. Drag queens also tend to have fuller lips and heavier eyelids.
A drag queen show is basically a live performance by drag queens who sing or dance while wearing elaborate costumes as well as wigs and heavy makeup.
3) The makeup
Applying drag queen makeup is an art form. It takes time, practice, and a whole lot of makeup to perfect the look. And even then, you're never really done learning. There are always new techniques and products to try. It's not as easy as it looks.
We don't just put on a wig, we contour our faces with the foundation to make them more feminine looking.
There's something very empowering about transforming into someone else for the night- like living out your wildest fantasies in real life! Wearing dresses, wigs, high heels and false eyelashes means that I'm free to be whoever I want without fear of judgment or ridicule. No one can ever tell me that I can't do something because I'm just a man. It feels incredible to know that by putting on some fake eyelashes and lipstick my entire appearance changes.

4) The tucking
Tucking is a must if you want to achieve that smooth, hourglass silhouette. It's not as easy as it looks, and it definitely takes some practice. But once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to do it in your sleep! Here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Use a good quality tape. This will help keep everything in place and prevent any wardrobe malfunctions.
2. Start from the front and work your way back. 3. Roll the waistband of your underwear over so it creates a horizontal crease across your butt crack. 4. Bend forward at the waist and tuck the penis underneath so that there is no bulge visible from behind or in front.
5. Pull tight to create a seamless line that extends all the way up to just below your belly button (the tuck should be long enough for you to grab with both hands). 6. Make sure the fabric is pulled tightly around your crotch, but not too tightly otherwise this can cause injury or pain. 7. Once you have tucked everything away, pull up your skirt or dress so that it covers any exposed skin on your thighs. 8. Sit down slowly to make sure nothing has shifted out of place and repeat steps 4-7 until all the desired parts are tucked securely into place under the garment
5) The wigs
Wigs are one of the most important aspects of a drag queen's look. They can be expensive, but they make a huge difference in the overall effect. Wigs also require a lot of care and maintenance, which can be time-consuming. Many queens will only wear their wig for an hour or two at a time before switching to another wig. One way that many queens get around this is by going with synthetic wigs, which don't need as much upkeep. Some queens have signature wigs that they wear regularly, while others like to change things up by wearing different styles every day. Regardless of what kind of wig you have, always keep it well maintained so it doesn't go out of style too quickly!
6) The lighting & camera angles
As a drag queen, you quickly learn that the lighting and camera angles are everything. The right lighting can make you look like a million bucks, while the wrong lighting can make you look washed out and tired. The same goes for camera angles - a good angle can make you look slim and sexy, while a bad angle can make you look wide and frumpy. When you're filming a show with more than one queen, it's important to remember that the majority of your performance will be shown in the side shots. So always try to put on your best face when shooting those!
You also have to remember that what may look fantastic from far away may not be so great up close on film.
7) Acting like you mean it, even if you don't
Being a drag queen is all about faking it 'til you make it. You have to be confident, even if you don't feel it, and put on a show that makes people believe you're the hottest thing since sliced bread. It's not easy, but it's worth it when you see the smiles on people's faces. The best part of being a drag queen is getting to live in two worlds simultaneously: one as a man, and one as an exaggerated female persona. For me, being able to do this for an audience of queer youth who can't always express themselves in their day-to-day lives means everything. I want them to know they are valid, no matter what. I want them to know they are loved, just like any other person.
8) Getting the crowd to react however you want them to
As a drag queen, one of the most important things is to be able to control the crowd. You need to be able to get them to laugh when you want them to, to dance when you want them to, and to overall just have a good time. It's all about reading the room and knowing what your audience wants. Sometimes it can be hard because different crowds react differently to different things so you always have to stay on your toes and know how they're feeling at that moment. But this skill also comes in handy outside of drag performances as well!
9) Letting people know it's all fake, when it's not
It can be pretty hard to let your guard down and show people that you're not always on as a drag queen. But it's important to remember that, at the end of the day, we're all just people. And sometimes, it's nice to be able to relax and be ourselves without all the glitz and glamour. That being said, there are plenty of times when it's fun to get dressed up in makeup and clothes that may not be our usual attire. What matters is that everyone is comfortable with themselves, no matter how they present themselves!
10) Understanding how much better your life will be without drag queens in it
1) You'll save so much money on makeup. 2) You'll never have to worry about your wig falling off in public again. 3) You can finally get a good night's sleep without worrying about your false eyelashes coming undone. 4) You won't have to deal with the drama of backstage politics anymore. 5) And most importantly, you'll be able to live your life authentically and without judgment. 6) You'll be able to avoid getting killed by an angry drag queen or their very irritated partner. 7) You'll also have time for all those things you've been putting off like going outside or doing anything fun because you were too busy being fabulous. 8) Not having to constantly remind yourself that people are always watching will make it easier for you to actually just relax and enjoy yourself sometimes. 9) You might even find out that there's more to life than just living as a drag queen. 10) Who knows? You might even decide you want to take this opportunity to figure out who the real person is underneath all that paint and wigs.
