Call Me By Your Name

Luca Guadagnino’s latest masterpiece comes from a young adult novel of the same name. Call Me By Your Name is equal parts love story and examination of sexuality, which may sound odd for a film about teenage romance, but it works beautifully. It’s a classic in every sense. Timothée Chalamet (who also starred in last year’s best picture winner, La La Land) delivers an astonishing performance as Elio Perlman—the conflicted 17-year-old son of an archaeologist living in Italy who finds himself falling for his father’s research assistant (Armie Hammer). This movie is so good that you might even be able to get your parents to watch it with you. Be warned though—it will make you fall in love with everyone involved. But hey, at least you’ll have some great Pride Month movies on netflix! So go ahead and stream it right now. You won’t regret it.

Pariah

This intimate character study is based on director Dee Rees’ own experiences growing up as a closeted lesbian. It follows Alike (Adepero Oduye), an African-American teenager coming of age in Brooklyn, New York. As she falls for her best friend, everything she thought she knew about herself is put into question. Simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming, Pariah is a touching portrait of an adolescent struggle with identity. And it features one of star Adepero Oduye’s most outstanding performances to date. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead and remains one of our favorite LGBTQ films. [Netflix] Boys Don’t Cry: Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her portrayal of Brandon Teena, a transgender man who was raped and murdered after his sexual identity became public knowledge. Director Kimberly Peirce expertly tells Brandon’s story through his girlfriend Lana Tisdel (Chloë Sevigny) — whose testimony ultimately led to two men being convicted of murder — while also including supporting characters that provide context and perspective.

Happy Birthday, Marsha!

Although LGBTQ films have existed for years, they began to find mainstream success in 2009. That year, Amazon Studios released The Boys Are Back starring Clive Owen as a homophobic father struggling to understand his gay son (played by Freddie Highmore). The film received positive reviews and grossed $3 million domestically—not bad for a small indie film. Since then, more LGBT-themed movies have been added to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Here are 25 of our favorites. We’ve listed them chronologically based on their release date. Enjoy!

Queer Eye

If you’re looking for a queer film with a lot of heart, watch Queer Eye. This American reality show features five gay men who are experts in fashion, culture, food, design and health helping people in need of a makeover while encouraging them to live their best lives. In addition to being uplifting, it also sheds light on some of today’s most pressing social issues. It will leave you feeling empowered and ready to take on your own challenges. It is currently streaming on Netflix.

Will & Grace

Set in New York City, Will & Grace is a sitcom that follows a gay lawyer, played by Eric McCormack, and his best friend and roommate, a straight interior designer played by Debra Messing. It’s quite possibly one of the most popular LGBT-friendly shows out there. There are 10 seasons for you to catch up on—make it happen during Pride Month! You can watch new episodes on NBC or stream them via Hulu. If you’re interested in checking out some more TV shows with LGBT characters, check out our list here.

Love Simon

Love, Simon is a cute and fun coming-of-age film about an unpopular teenage boy who realizes he has feelings for another boy in his school. While there’s some light drama, it’s not too intense. If you haven’t seen Love, Simon yet, go watch it! You won’t regret it. [Streaming on Netflix] Xavier Dolan's It's Only The End of The World: Xavier Dolan’s latest film is one of his most emotionally gripping to date. Vincent Cassel plays a writer who returns home after 12 years to tell his family that he has terminal cancer. There are no major surprises here—but watching these characters come together to support each other makes for an incredibly touching movie experience. [Streaming on Netflix] Call Me By Your Name: Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of André Aciman’s novel is probably going to be your favorite gay movie ever. Timothée Chalamet plays Elio, a 17-year-old who falls in love with Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year old graduate student staying with his family over summer break.
